If you are going to get anywhere in the world, you have to read a lot of books.

Reading

Reading is a fundamental skill that plays a crucial role in a child's academic success and overall development. In St. Mary’s we place a strong emphasis on developing our pupils' reading skills and fostering a love of reading.

We believe that reading for pleasure is one of the most effective ways to improve our pupils' reading skills. Our teachers encourage our pupils to read widely and independently, and we provide a range of books and reading materials to support them.

We use a range of assessments, including Accelerated Reader, to monitor our pupils' reading progress and provide feedback to them and their parents. This assessment tool allows us to track our pupils' reading comprehension, identify areas for improvement, and provide targeted support.

In addition to improving our pupils' reading skills, reading for pleasure has numerous other benefits. It helps to develop our pupils' vocabulary, grammar, and writing skills, as well as their critical thinking and empathy skills.

At St. Mary’s we encourage all our pupils to develop a habit of reading by making it an enjoyable and engaging experience. We provide a range of reading resources to cater to our pupils' individual interests and reading levels.

DEAR Time is held on a regular basis. DEAR stands for Drop Everything And Read.

We recognise that reading is a vital skill that plays a crucial role in our pupils' academic success and overall development. We are committed to fostering a love of reading in our pupils and providing them with the support they need to become confident and proficient readers.
